I've had two back surgeries and they left me damaged. I can't do much walking or... anything else really, but I need to get this weight off. It's been difficult. I've been watching my diet carefully but I think my metabolism is so low right now that diet alone isn't making the weight go away.

Hi TwylaDee
Sorry to hear that you have had so much trouble with your surgeries etc.
The good news is (and this is going to irritate a lot of people), but you really don't need to exercise to lose weight, in fact, I'd go as far as saying that you should do it for the health and feeling good benefits, but ignore it as a weight loss tool, certainly until you get to a stage where you can perform at a reasonable intensity for some time.
Walking is great, but if you can't manage it, then anything that involves low intensity movement is fine, swim, cycle, step ups, etc etc
To lose a pound of weight from exercise, you would need to run for 7 hours a week, imagine how long it would take if you can only run for 20 mins.
Walking - 200 cals per hour perhaps a little more. 16 or so days of walking to lose a pound?
don't get me wrong, you can get a little fat loss from exercise, but your diet should be the primary concern if you have a lot of weight to lose and have no real sport or performance goals.
I have a client (well, I'm coaching her for free as she has no money) and she is closing in on 28 lbs of weight loss in 9 weeks, she should hit the 2 stone off next week. She can't believe it. Last year she exercised for 10 hours a week and only lost a few pounds (diet not in order).
I wrote about the poorness of exercise in a recent blog post, it has the numbers so you can clarify the details if you like.
