^ Absolutely disagree with Stephen based on nothing but personal experience.
Last January (date unknown) I started dieting starting at 14 stone 11 lbs
Last April I joined a gym with weight loss as my main focus
The scales moved slower but I was measuring and taking pictures
By new year 2014 total weight loss was just under 60lbs
By new year I was a size 10 bottoms (yet not light by any means IMO)
Definitely use exercise along side weight loss if you can... the benefits are amazing not only from the outside (your body) but inside... Self esteem, confidence, helps anxiety, depression, mood booster, speeds up metabolism, fat burner, other health benefits .... life style changes.
I have a friend I spoke to last week who has lost a nice amount of weight also but hasn't been exercising, she is now down about the excess skin (her body) and wishes she'd started exercising sooner in her journey. I'm fairly sure mine would have been worse without also.
IMO it's about it all: health, appearance and mind benefits (does so much for you mental health). As far as dieting AND exercising goes I am a DO IT person even if it's half an hour twice a week.

I totally agree with all the points you made about exercise and diet being done together, great, I think I said that, but it's pretty hard to disagree with the hard facts.
"Exercise does not burn many calories unless you are doing an awful lot of it'
All you need to do is look at some of the data on exercise modes, and the calorie burn.
Running 5-600 calories per hour, and that would be almost impossible for many people, overweight or not.
So, you would need to run EVERY DAY for an hour, for a week to lose 1 lb of fat (providing you didn't overeat and ate at body weight maintenance calories), does that sound like a good deal? Overtraining, lack of motivation, slow results?
I completely think that doing an exercise routine, even if just walking, whilst losing weight is the right thing to do, all I am saying is exercise is not ESSENTIAL for weight loss.
For those who are obese, or have joint issues etc, work on getting the weight off first, exercise will become easier.
How does exercise get rid of the excess skin?? One would need to build a lot of muscle to fill out the skin that remains when someone has gone from very overweight to very thin very quickly.
I'm afraid that anecdotes, although interesting and useful, are very emotive and not always based on what is really going on.
People who lose more weight when they exercise are well known for feeling better from the exercise, and thus EATING BETTER, which is where a lot of the benefits on body composition are coming from.
